How do brands find creators for a campaign in India

There are three routes: direct outreach to creators yourself, a discovery or marketplace platform, and a managed agency. Direct outreach is cheapest per deliverable and most expensive in your team time, and it works well up to about three or four creators. Platforms solve discovery at scale but leave you doing the negotiation, contracting and chasing. A managed agency is worth it when you are running several creators at once, when the category carries compliance risk, or when nobody in-house owns this properly, and it is the wrong choice for a single collaboration with a creator you have already identified.

Discovery is the easy part

Brands usually frame this as a discovery problem. Where do we find the creators. In practice discovery is the least difficult stage, and framing it as the main problem is what leads teams to buy a tool that solves the stage they were already handling.

The hard parts are selection, negotiation, contracting and delivery. Selection means working out which of the plausible names will actually reach your buyer. Negotiation means agreeing a rate against real performance rather than a follower count. Contracting means securing the rights you will need before the content exists. Delivery means somebody chasing a deliverable that is three days late.

Evaluate every route below against those four, not against how many creators it can show you.

Route one, direct outreach

You find creators yourself, message them, and run the collaboration in-house. This is how most brands start and it is a genuinely good way to learn the category.

Where it works

Small numbers. Up to roughly three or four creators, direct outreach is efficient and the relationship you build is yours rather than intermediated. If you have someone in-house who enjoys this work and has the time, it is often the right answer.

What it costs that you will not see on an invoice

Team hours, and a lot of them. Every creator is a separate conversation, a separate negotiation, a separate contract and a separate chase. Multiply the hours by ten and the arithmetic changes.

The reply rate problem

Cold outreach to creators has a low response rate, and the creators most worth reaching are the ones with the fullest inbox. Expect to contact several times the number you need.

The terms you will not know to ask for

This is the real risk. Brands running direct frequently secure a good rate and then discover they cannot use the asset in paid social, or that no revision cap was set, or that nothing was agreed about how long the post stays up. Those are expensive to fix afterwards.

How to do it well anyway

Ask for median view count before discussing rate. Send a written brief rather than a message thread. Use a short written agreement covering deliverables, posting window, usage rights, revisions and disclosure. Those three habits close most of the gap.

Route two, discovery platforms and marketplaces

Software that lets you search creators by category, audience demographics and engagement metrics, sometimes with campaign management and payment attached.

Where it works

Scale and shortlisting. If you need to move from an empty page to fifty plausible names in a category you do not know, a platform does that faster than anything else. Audience demographic data is genuinely useful and hard to get otherwise.

What it does not solve

Judgement. A platform tells you a creator has the right audience on paper. It does not tell you whether their last six brand collaborations felt forced, whether their comments read as an engaged audience, or whether they deliver on time. Somebody still has to look.

Data quality varies

Platform metrics are estimates derived from what the platform can see, and they can diverge from what the creator sees in their own analytics. Use platform data to shortlist and verify against creator-supplied figures before agreeing a rate.

The marketplace incentive

Marketplaces that take a fee per transaction are incentivised toward transaction volume. That is not sinister, it is just an incentive worth being aware of when the recommendation engine surfaces a name.

You are still doing the work

Most platforms leave negotiation, contracting, creative direction and chasing with you. The subscription replaces the searching, not the managing.

Route three, a managed agency

An agency that represents creators, or that buys on your behalf, and takes responsibility for the campaign from brief to reporting.

Where it works

Volume, compliance-sensitive categories, and organisations where nobody owns creator marketing properly. If you are running several creators at once, the coordination is the job, and an agency exists to do that job.

One point of accountability

The practical value is having somebody answerable when a deliverable is late. With direct outreach, the person you have to chase is the person you are trying to build a relationship with. That conversation is easier when it is not yours.

Terms you would not have known to secure

Usage rights scope, whitelisting as a separate permission, exclusivity windows, revision caps, disclosure written into the deliverable specification. An agency that does this daily writes those in by default.

Ask where the margin sits

Agency commercial models vary. A brand may see a retainer, a management fee, a creator-side arrangement or another written structure. Ask for the exact model and the payment flow before contracting so the total scope can be compared with direct outreach and platform costs.

The roster question

An agency that represents its own creators can only offer you its own creators. That is a real limitation and a good agency will tell you when its roster is not right for your category instead of selling you the closest available name.

When an agency is the wrong choice

This section exists because most agency pages do not have one.

You want one collaboration with a creator you have already chosen

If you know the name and it is a single deliverable, message them. An intermediary adds a layer to a transaction that did not need one.

You have strong in-house capability

If someone on your team already runs creator campaigns well, has the relationships and knows what to put in a contract, an agency is duplicating a function you already have.

Your budget is small enough that coordination is trivial

At a genuinely small scale, the coordination an agency provides is not worth intermediating. Run it yourself, learn the category, and revisit when the volume justifies it.

The agency roster does not fit your category

A roster agency without creators in your vertical is going to propose an approximation. Better to be told that in the first reply and go elsewhere.

You need audiences the roster cannot reach

If your buyer is in a language or region the roster does not cover, no amount of campaign management fixes that. Ask which languages and regions the roster actually reaches before anything else.

A practical selection checklist, whichever route you take

Median view count over the last fifteen posts

The number that predicts what your deliverable will do. Get it before you discuss rate.

Audience location, language and age

Overlap with the audience you are actually buying, not audience size.

Comment quality on the last ten posts

Real questions indicate attention. Generic praise indicates scrolling, or purchased followers.

Brand density in the recent feed

Some brand history is good and means the creator can work to a spec. A feed that is entirely sponsored has an audience trained to skip.

Posting consistency

A creator posting several times a week has a live audience. One posting twice a month is asking your campaign to reintroduce them.

Whether they will put terms in writing

A creator who is comfortable agreeing deliverables, rights and revisions in writing is a creator who has done this before. Reluctance here is the most informative signal on the list.

FAQ

Related questions

What is the cheapest way to find creators for a campaign in India?

Direct outreach, if you count only the creator fee. Once you count team hours, the terms you did not know to negotiate and the cost of a deliverable arriving late with nothing agreed in writing, the answer depends heavily on how many creators you are running. Below three or four, direct is usually genuinely cheapest.

Are influencer discovery platforms worth paying for?

They are good at the stage they solve, which is going from nothing to a shortlist with demographic data attached. They generally do not solve negotiation, contracting, creative direction or chasing delivery, so budget for someone to still do that work.

When should a brand use a creator agency instead of doing it in-house?

When you are running several creators at once, when the category carries compliance risk that needs handling before content is produced, or when nobody in-house actually owns this. For a single collaboration with a creator you have already identified, an agency is an unnecessary layer.

How do I check whether a creator has fake followers?

Compare median view count to follower count and read the comments on recent posts. A large gap between the two numbers, combined with generic single-word comments, is the clearest signal available without paid tooling. Sudden follower jumps without a corresponding jump in views is another.

Should I ask a creator for their analytics?

Yes, and a professional creator will share them. Ask for median views across recent posts and audience location, language and age. A creator unwilling to share basic audience data is asking you to buy a media placement without the audience figures.

How many creators should I contact to book five?

Several times that number. Response rates on cold outreach are low, some will be unavailable in your window, and some will price outside your budget. Building a shortlist with no slack is how a campaign timeline slips before it starts.
